How do I find out about………?

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year at Merriam Elementary!

Many of you are new families in the community, and it might be reassuring for you to have some idea of how you will receive information about school events etc.

N2K (need to know) weekly newsletter:  This is the PTO’s primary method of communication with the Merriam community, but it’s also more than that – Messages from Ed, Juliana, and Nurse Betty are featured at least monthly.  AB events are often communicated via the N2K (School theatre, Musical performances, the popular Family Learning Lecture Series, School Committee Meetings and Minutes/Updates), as are Merriam events such as Community Day and Field day, along with more PTO specific information (Fall Fair, the Staff/PTO Basketball game, Volunteer Opportunities, and Fundraising information).   The N2K will arrive in everyone’s email inbox on the day before school begins every week – generally this is a Sunday evening, but if there is a holiday on the Monday – the N2K will arrive on the Monday evening.   The N2K is generated directly from the website and will feature a brief overview of the articles of the week, with the opportunity to click through for further information. Everyone is automatically subscribed to the N2K, but you absolutely have the option of unsubscribing yourself, should you not wish to receive it, with a simple click of a button.  We hope you will choose to continue receiving it as it is a diverse and helpful resource.   Those of you who were already receiving the N2K should continue to do so as before.  New families may not see the N2K for a couple of weeks until the Parent Portal is closed and the information is sorted.  If you wish to receive the N2K before that time – be sure to self-subscribe at www.merriampto.org/site/n2k/.   Sometimes the first time you receive the N2K it ends up in the ‘Promotions’ tab in a gmail inbox (or in spam) so please have a look there if you do not see it in your inbox.   If you need help tracking why the N2K is not arriving in your inbox, please drop an email to katherine.lemke@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to troubleshoot and tech-support.

Merriam PTO Website:  The N2K is generated directly from the website (www.merriampto.org).  Please come visit us!  There is also a calendar on the website which you can link directly to your own calendar (on your computer or mobile phone) and school events will automatically appear.  If you need more information about this, by all means contact us (katherine.lemke@gmail.com) and we’ll do our best to tech-support.

Facebook:  Our community has an active Facebook presence at www.facebook.com/groups/merriamschoolacton/   We encourage you to subscribe!

Last-Friday-of-TheMonth Backpack mailing:  We’ve been working to cut down on the paper going home, and have reduced our backpack mailings to once a month (excepting September, which will be twice).   You can expect to see an ‘upcoming events’ document, and possibly any forms which may need filling out and returning to the school, along with the monthly cafeteria menu, and any mailings that need to come from the office.   We are working to have all forms in online format also.  Paper copies of all important forms are generally kept available at the office for student or parent pick up if needed.

PTO emails:  Direct emails from the PTO also occasionally get sent to add depth and information about PTO events and activities.  These are the emails that you consented to (or didn’t) in your Parent Portal exercises.

The Merriam administration and your student’s teacher will also communicate with you as needed.   Most teachers make it clear at the beginning of the school year how they will be communicating with their parents.

Thank you so much – wishing you all a really great year.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any queries!
